The start-up BiAqua developed a novel approach (invented by TUD) of combating bio-fouling by selective phosphate removal from the feed water, which stops the growth of micro-organisms. Phosphate is adsorbed to below 1 μg/l on a bio-degradable adsorbens, containing iron with good affinity to phosphate.

The adsorbens in a normal sand-filter or IX housing is operated as such and can be regenerated multiple times with caustic. Pilot on drinking water and secondary wastewater treatment effluent proved effective and stable, resulting in constant low pressure drop over RO modules that otherwise exhibited severe bio-fouling.

Applications in surface water, horticulture, cooling towers are developed with partners. Outlook for 2015 is demo scale. www.biaqua.nl
