Viedma Ripening and Temperature Cycling: two robust methods for complete deracimisation of chiral molecules via crystallisation

Two recently developed methods will be presented, that allow for the complete conversion to a single chirality in crystals. For that a racemic mixture of conglomerate crystals of a chiral compound, in contact with a saturated solution in which the compound is racemised, is either ground or subjected to a periodic temperature change. Ways to speed up and make this deracemization process applicable to non-conglomerate forming compounds will be discussed.

Separation of NaCl/KCl by hot leaching/cooling crystallization

In sylvinite mining operations, NaCl (halite) and KCl (syvite) are present as separate crystals, enabling separation using physical processes such as flotation or electrostatic separation. However, for full recovery of potassium, dissolution is required. Also other processes can yield mixed brines. Hot leaching/cooling crystallization can be used to crystallize NaCl and KCl separately from these mixed brines. The cooling crystallization requires dilution by water, its amount needs to be carefully controlled in order to minimize the evaporation energy input. Also the system will tend to move towards the double saturation point, causing NaCl and KCl to crystallize simultaneously. For this control, the application of XRF will be highlighted.

Crystallisation development in the Pharmaceutical Industry

During my presentation I will discuss the timelines and activities in pharmaceutical development with focus on the crystallization step. I will also give some examples of what choices need to be made and how different process parameters interact and influence product properties.

An industrial perspective on different crystallization techniques -
application on the separation of MDI isomers

Crystallization offers significant advantages compared with distillation in terms of energy usage and investment costs. Huntsman has a long history in batch layer growth crystallization both as static and dynamic technologies, in addition it developed with Freezetec/Sulzer suspension crystallization for the separation of MDI isomers. The experiences with all technologies will be discussed, their short-falls and advantages, as well as investment considerations.

Melt crystallization is, or is foreseen, to be part of the production process to produce bio-based chemicals. The presentation shows the reason to use crystallization for some bio-based chemicals and a summary of the available industrial melt crystallization technologies for such uses.
