20111207 MACT – Ton Franken – “Separation scan executed at Sappi Nijmegen”

Sappi Nijmegen uses waste paper as raw material. Pulping waste paper leads to release of dextrin in water, that later decomposes to undesirable fatty acids. As part of a KCPK project the separation scan investigates the feasibility to use nanofiltration to recover dextrin as well as paper fiber and water. MACT has executed the scan.

The added value of the scan besides the technical feasibility was the pragmatic approach, triggering other potential improvements in Sappi’s production and a contribution to what paper and carton might do with valorizing residual streams. The economy did not meet the criterion of one year payback time, but gives enough food for further thoughts. www.sappi.com www.mact.nl
