20111207 TNO – Arno Volker – “Ultrasonic Particle Monitor”

TNO Delft has developed an inline ultrasonic concentration and size distribution monitor (UPM) for particles and drops in liquids. It uses pulses of ultrasonic waves that are reflected by particles and collected by a receiver, all mounted in line on process piping. It is based on amplitude changes depending on properties, location and number of (more than one kind of) particles and applies forward model that always the strongest echo will be detected.

Current practical application is already in oil exploration and production to discriminate between oil droplets and solid particles in water:0-100-1.000 ppm and 3-5-150 μm. It is insensitive to fouling, variations in salinity, pH, temperature, turbidity and chemical composition of the liquid and combines little maintenance with high availability. www.tno.nl
