20120918 TOP- bv - Mrs. Myriam Knopf – Technoproject Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) as accelerator for extraction

TOP is specialized in development and design of innovative food processes and equipment as well as innovation management services. PEF was originally developed for food conservation. TOP-bv‘s PurePulse technology is the only commercial large scale technology to pasteurize food below 40°C. Its high pulse energy makes PurePulse also very suitable for accelerating extraction of components from biomass. The principle is increasing energy levels locally, which creates pores in the cell wall, repaired later by the cell, until cell rupture. The cell releases components that can be captured by suitable extractants. NL GUTS members Cosun, FrieslandCampina, Purac and Vion participated in this Technoproject. Variabels were field strength, pulse frequency and temperature. In all tested applications the component extraction efficiency was considerably increased and the juice yield greatly improved. Further research is planned to identify process optima. www.top-bv.nl


20120918 WUR (Wageningen University and Research lab) – Mr. Remco Hamoen: Electrostatic separation of powders in food

The Agrotechnological & Food Sciences Group of WUR works on development and application of novel technologies to create high-added value healthy food products for producer, consumer and environment. Dry separation consumes much less energy (drying) then current wet separation. However the separation efficiency is far from sufficient. WUR is investigating dry electrostatic separation features of a multitude of flours based on dispersing particles in a gas (air) stream, charging the particles and then separating them in an electro-magnetic field. Depending on particle properties (not sticky, shape, chargeability, density) and size reduction to set proteins free from other flour constituents. Separation tests have been executed and results compared with modelling data. Electrostatic separation of food powders is feasible, depending on milling and charging and the separation performance can be characterised by their test facility. www.fbr.wur.nl


20120918 Proxcys b.v. . - Mr. Hans May –Technoproject Radial Chromatograph

Proxcys has developed the radial chromatography technology, that saves space, material, weight and claims unparalleled fast start-up and regeneration cycle characteristics combined with excellent uniform packing characteristics and hydrodynamics. These features have been tested in cooperation with NL GUTS members DSM and FrieslandCampina against their conventional axial systems. The following parameters were evaluated: the efficiency compared to the protein load of the column, the UV signal after the column, the purity of the obtained compound and the overall yield of the compound.

The results of the experiments show no significant difference in the process performance between the radial flow column and the axial flow column. The packing operation of the radial flow column is much easier. Due to its mechanical construction, the investment for the radial flow columns is expected to be lower. www.proxcys.nl


20120918 Dishman Netherlands B.V. – Mrs. Mieke Sibeijn: Separation Scan of Dishman Cholesterol process.

Dishman recovers cholesterols from wool grease. Due to worsened wool grease quality, disturbing the process and leading to unacceptable cleaning frequencies, and having reached the limits of the current process (several decades lifetime) Dishman boarded on the Separation Scan program of the Dutch Government. The separation scan was executed by two independent experts J. Koole (Belgium) and Synthon (The Netherlands) and focused on the cleaning steps, the extraction process and the potential impact on the chromatographic purification. Several recommendations have been implemented right away and resulted in much less down time, materials saving and less waste. Additional in process dirt removal will be investigated, cleaning wool grease prior to processing seems attractive and new extraction column set-up will be implemented. AkzoNobel - TU/e – Mr. Marc Jongmans - Separation of close boiling acids with extractive distillation by exploiting pKa difference

Jongmans investigateds the separation of byproduct di-chloro-acetic acid (DCA) from mono-chloro-acetic acid (MCA). Normal distillation is uneconomical due to low relative volatility of the MCA/DCA mixture. A novel separation has to comply with energy reduction by factor, capital cost reduction by factor, ensuring a high and constant product quality and patentable.

Extractive distillation is very promising on basis of a process design after screening a large number of solvents and modeling on the selected solvent. The thermodynamic data have been determined experimentally. www.ispt.eu  www.akzonobel.com  www.tue.nl
