20140211 KWR Watercycle Research Institute- Mr. Emile Corneslissen – Forward Osmosis for Separation, Concentration and Power Generation

KWR is investigating the possibilities of applying Osmosis for different purposes. The presentation covers an overview of 1) Forward Osmosis (=Osmosis), 2) the combination of Forward Osmosis with MBR and RO on lab and pilot scale to recover dissolved compounds from water recycle with reduced operational involvement, 3) the developments in membrane configurations to make FO feasible, 4) Sewer Mining, where FO enables higher biogas conversion and making pure water from sewage, 5) Concentrating oil & gas production and other waste streams.

The second topic Pressure Retarded Osmosis enables the conversion of osmotic energy to electrical power using the difference in salt concentration between sea water and river water. PRO may in future enable the Osmotic desalination of seawater, reducing net power demand considerably. www.kwrwater.nl
