20140923 Austrian Institute of Technology (A) – Mr. Bernhard Gahleiter – “ChitoClean Enhanced Chitin-Based Biosorbents for Drinking Water Purification”

In an EU sponsored FP7 project the Health & Environment group of AIT coordinates an international consortium to develop the bio-sorbent ECM from Chitin through a chemical modification without the disadvantages of other Chitin based sorbents. The lab and pilot tests results are: Chitosan removes humic acid, colour and heavy metals.

ECM seems to be safe for drinking water; domestic appliances prototype tested; large scale pilot with sand filter, Chitosan filter and polishing activated carbon operates well. Technique seems economically feasible. Next step is to develop sustainable EMS regeneration. www.ait.ac.at/departments/health-environment/
