TUe develops a process to recover or remove compounds from biomass with Deep Eutectic Solvents DES, mixtures of compounds that individually are solid and as mixture are liquid with a very low melting point and act as a solvent. The individual compounds have at least one hydrogen bond donor and one hydrogen bond acceptor. They are natural and exhibit features of ionic liquids, but have beneficial properties: easy and cheap, water and biocompatible, biodegradable.

This unique feature is used to extract lignin from cellulose rich biomass. The lignin containing DES is separated from biomass by centrifuges. Adding water to the centrate precipitates the lignin. The biomass is washed with water and filtered giving a cellulose pulp. DES can be recovered for reuse after adding a biodegradable anti-solvent.
