WUR gives a nice example of Process Systems Engineering PSE to arrive at an energy efficient drying configuration. Starting from life phase aspects for dried products, looking at functionalities of drying for bio-products and as condition heat recovery WUR defines a two stage drying system with humidity adsorbent for drying air specific per stage (1 zeolite; 2 silica), adsorbent regeneration and (pinch) integrated heat recovery, that consumes 1345 kJ/kg evaporated water compared to 4330 kJ/kg for a conventional dryer.
