20160621 FLUOR – Mr. Jelle Ernst Oude Lenferink - “The right troubleshooting strategy helps fixing a distillation problem”

Besides being a large EPC contractor Fluor also executes troubleshooting as part of their comprehensive services.

The underlying case concerns a distillation column operating below spec and far outside design conditions with the anomaly that the top temperature was considerably higher than further down with heavies in the overhead. Fluor applied IR and gamma scans to make temperature and density profiles over the distillation column sections and combined the data with simulations and hydraulic calculations to conclude that the root problems were maldistribution of the feed and reflux. After inspection of the reflux distributor and the reflux liquid conditions the solution was found in preventing reflux flash upon entry end boiling in the distributor. The distributor was modified, part of packing changed and conditions adapted to bring the distillation back on spec. www.fluor.com
