20160621 University Twente – Mr. Marek Blahusiak – “To distil or not to distil”

Knowing that distillation is a good and ubiquitous tool in process industry although with low energy efficiency, what can be done to improve that or just substitute it by for instance affinity separation with regeneration of the extractant.

The scheme more or less boils down to:

  • distillation is preferred for around 50/50 molar feeds;
  • add vapour recompression when the internal efficiency is OK in close boiler systems;
  • apply affinity separation in dilute systems or trace removal (low thermodynamic efficiency);
  • and more special introduce sufficient BP’s differences when attractive and repulsive interactions between compounds cause energy or azeotrope problems.
