20160913 VITO (BE)Membrane extraction: affinity separation with functionalised membranes

With its sustainable chemistry program, the Belgian institute VITO develops integrated separation and conversion technologies on basis of membrane contactors.

One application is membrane extraction, where the membrane separates the liquid phases and allows the solute to pass. VITO used commercially available fibres to demonstrate that volatile fatty acids can be recovered by membrane based reactive extraction from a mixed culture fermenter as part of bio-refining optimising extraction conditions. Changing the solvent for en enzymatic reaction allows higher reactant concentrations and 99% conversion through removing de product MPPA with membrane extraction. VITO applied Grignard Grafting on ceramic membranes pore walls to attach functional groups on the pore wall that act as a chromatographic adsorbent.

This FunMem process enables continuous separation of donor amines and chiral products with increased selectivity. www.vito.be
